The population of Stockton-on-Tees is estimated to be 196,592 which shows moderate growth (below national average) of the population since the previous census in 2011.
The population is growing older with the largest single age group being those aged 45 and 64 and the steepest increase in population in older age groups of over 65 years and over 80 years. 20% of the population are over 65 and 3% are over 85 years. Non-white ethnic groups make up 8% of the population with 4.6% of Asian ethnicity.
Population estimates show that by 2030 the over 65s population is estimated to increase by 21% or 7,900 people from 2021. The over 80s population is estimated to increase by 34% or 3,200 people from 2021. Asian, Black and mixed ethnic groups have a significantly younger age profile compared to the general population in Stockton-on-Tees.
There are large socio-economic inequalities in life expectancy. The gap in life expectancy between the least and most deprived areas is 13.9 years for women and 14.5 years for men. The gap in life expectancy for both women and men remain among the widest in the country.
